Labour rights in Asia: The ILO’s decent work agenda

The contentious issue of labour rights within Asia will be tackled at a panel discussion featuring prominent international labour rights experts at the University of Melbourne this evening (Thursday April 7).

The panel discussion will be presented by the University’s Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law, the Asian Law Centre, the Australian Centre for International Business, the Department of Management, the Asian Economics Centre and Asialink.

The Geneva-based International Labor Organization (ILO) is the world body responsible for promoting labour standards through its Decent Work agenda.

The panel will address labour rights issues in the Asia Pacific Region and will feature a range of experts in the area including:

- Mr Kari Tapiola, Executive Director, Standards and Fundamental Principles and Rights Work Sector, ILO Geneva,

-Mr Alan Boulton, Country Director, ILO Indonesia and Timor Leste

-Ms Myra Hanartani, Head of the Legal Bureau, Department of Manpower and Transmigration, Republic of Indonesia

-Mr Manuel G Imson, Under Secretary for Labor Relations, Department of Labor and Employment, The Philippines
