Graham Brown leads new Nossal Institute for Global Health
[ Research Review 0307 ]
Professor Graham Brown has been appointed Foundation Director of the new Nossal Institute for Global Health and Chair of Global Health in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne.
The Nossal Institute for Global Health – named in honour of one of Australia’s most eminent scientists, University of Melbourne Professor Emeritus Sir Gustav Nossal – is a strategic priority for the Faculty and the University. It has seeding funds for five years.
The Institute will focus on global health research, teaching, policy analysis and development assistance. It draws on University expertise in areas such as child health, mental health, prevention of blindness, vaccines and immunisation, and the strong programs of the Australian International Health Institute.
Professor Brown sees the Nossal Institute being a major academic centre – in the tradition of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University – but with an Australian ethos that blends the best of science with the best of public health.
Developing Partnerships to advance global health will be a major theme – across disciplines, institutions, sectors, cultures, around Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
The Institute will help to drive improvements in health and make important contributions to research and capacity building, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
Professor Brown has held advisory roles for programs of international health organisations such as the World Health Organization, worked many years in malaria-prone regions, including Papua New Guinea and Tanzania, and has focused his research on the immunology of malaria.
His current research focus is on Plasmodium falciparum malaria, the parasite responsible for severe malaria in children and pregnant women, with colleagues at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research where he was formerly head of the Division of Infection and Immunity.
Alongside his new role at the Nossal Institute, Professor Brown remains James Stewart Professor of Medicine and Head of the University’s Department of Medicine at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Western Hospital.
