The University’s Growing Esteem strategy has directed a sharper focus in 2006 on research priorities, quality and impact. Meanwhile, the strength of the University’s research performance confirms Melbourne’s position as a leading national research university.

Internationally, the University’s research standing as judged by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University institutional rankings has continued to improve with a ranking of 78 for 2006, compared with 82 in 2005. The University also improved its international rankings in all the disciplines surveyed by The Times Higher Education Supplement, namely, Biomedicine (7th), Arts and Humanities (7th), Social Sciences (10th), Technology (16th) and Science (27th).
