ASHE DIRECTOR RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS WURREKER AWARD

Media Release, Thursday 6 September 2007

Director for the Academy of Sport, Health and Education Mr Justin Mohamed has received the prestigious 2007 Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc (VAEAI) Wurreker Award in the category of “Community Based Employee”.

“I was both honoured and delighted to receive the Wurreker Award,” Mr Mohamed said. “When I accepted the award I believe it was a reflection not only of my work but of all those involved in ASHE. At the academy we strive to make a difference to the lives of individuals by offering opportunities to further their education, employment and overall life prospects.”

“ASHE has a very strong connection with VAEAI as both organisations are supporting vocational education opportunities for indigenous people. The personal approach provided by ASHE also mimics the values of VAEAI’s Wurreker Strategy,” he said.

The University of Melbourne’s Goulburn Valley Partnerships Manager, Mrs Kellie Vise, nominated Justin for the award and was present at the official awards night on Thursday 16th August 2007.

“It was wonderful to see Justin accepting the Wurreker Award. His hard work at ASHE, as well as with local indigenous organisations and in the Goulburn Valley community in general has had an extremely positive effect on the region,” Mrs Vise said.

The Wurreker Awards are held annually and recognise individuals and organisations achieving outstanding results in their chosen areas of expertise.

Other local organisations and individuals who were section finalists for Wurreker Awards included Rumbalara Football Netball Club (“Koorie Organisation”), Mr Roland Atkinson from Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE (“Teacher/Trainer”), the University of Melbourne – Goulburn Valley (“University”), Notre Dame Secondary College – McAuley Champagnat Programme (“Public Sector Employer”) and Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative won the “Community Based Employer” section.
