Ambassadors and heads from seven Latin American countries discussed opportunities for future development and collaboration between Australia and Latin America in areas of mining, agriculture and foreign affairs at a key seminar hosted recently by the University of Melbourne.

The seminar was opened by University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis, Victorian Parliamentary Secretary for Human Services, Mr Telmo Langullier, and Her Excellency Martha Ortiz de Rosas, Dean of the Latin American Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Mexico.

As well as Ambassador Martha Ortiz de Rosas, major international presenters included Ambassador Mr Jose Luis Balmaceda, Republic of Chile; Ambassador Mr Claudio De La Puente, Republic of Peru; Ambassador Mr Pedro Raul Villagra Delgado, Argentine Republic; Ambassador Mr Fernando De Mello Barreto, Brazil; Ambassador M Luis Antonio Rodas-Posso, Republic of Ecuador; and Mr Nelson Davila-Lameda, Charge d’Affaires, a.i., Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Presentations were made by the University’s Professor Snow Barlow, Horticulture and Viticulture, and PhD student, Ms Frances Van Ruth, who is researching The Internationalisation of Australian Firms: how business and social networks help overcome the psychic distance between a firm and a market.

Mr Tony Crooks, the University’s Director, International, says the forum presented a valuable opportunity for diplomatic missions, government officials, academics and employers to exchange ideas on building collaboration and enhancing relations between Latin America and Australia in critical areas of economics, as well as political and social arenas.
