Tertiary Education issues at forefront of public policy debate

Media Release, Wednesday 25 June 2008

At a time of major review in the tertiary education sector, Australia’s education leaders, policy makers and thinkers will discuss what the country needs from its tertiary institutions, now and in the future, in a seminar series at the University of Melbourne.

As our leaders consider the future direction of Australia, its economy, society and the big questions facing us in the future, two of the nation’s leaders in higher education will examine the often overlooked role that education plays in meeting national goals in the first of five seminars commencing this Monday 30 June.

Vice Chancellors of the University of Melbourne and University of Canberra, Professors Glyn Davis and Stephen Parker, will discuss how to build national capacity in the era of the global knowledge economy, education’s contribution to the workforce and productivity, the strengthening of co-ordination across the tertiary sector, and the government’s potential to influence higher education policy.

This session will be chaired by Emeritus Professor Denise Bradley, Chair of the Australian Higher Education Review Expert Panel.

Future sessions in the Investing in the Future: Renewing Australia Tertiary Education public seminar series will examine:
• The Bradley Review of Australian Higher Education – a panel analysis and discussion (21 July)
• The shape of the political economy of tertiary education in the next decade and beyond (28 July)
