University of Melbourne experts available to comment on the end of the financial year
Media Release, Monday 30 June 2008
A number of University of Melbourne experts across a range of disciplines are available for comment on the eve of the end of the 2007-2008 Financial Year.
Professor John Freebairn an applied microeconomics and policy analysis expert from the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. He says the start of a new financial year on July 1 is a big occasion.
“Tax rates go down quite substantially on the first of July, child care allowances’ go up, it will be the official end for the Democrats in the Federal Government with a new Senate coming in.”
Professor Freebairn also says the new financial year promises to be just as interesting.
“While we won’t see the results of the Federal Government’s review of the tax system until the end of next year, there will be plenty of enquiries tabling reports over the next 12 months.
“The first is obviously the Garnaut Climate Change interim report on July 4, plus others such as the motor vehicle industry, TCF, and innovation report. It will be interesting to see what the government is going to do with the results.”
