July 4 US Independence Day: University of Melbourne Experts available to comment

As the United States prepares to celebrate its Independence Day, the Fourth of July, University of Melbourne experts are available to comment on a wide range of issues relating to one of the biggest and most important economic and political entities in the world.

Michael Gawenda, former Age Editor in Chief, is the inaugural Head of the University’s Centre for the Advanced Study of Journalism, part of the new Graduate School of Journalism. A three time Walkley Award winner, he spent four years from 2004 to 2007 as The Age’s Washington Correspondent, and recently published a book “American Notebook” on his time in the US.

Also in the Arts Faculty is Dr Barbara Keys from the School of Historical Studies, who is an expert on modern American politics and history. She received her PhD in History from Harvard University in 2001, and has previously taught at California State University in Sacramento and was a research fellow at the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. Her teaching areas include 20th century America, U.S. foreign relations, and the Cold War in global perspective.

The Melbourne Law School is also home to a number of experts, including constitutional law experts Professor Michael Crommelin and Professor Cheryl Saunders AO, free speech expert Professor Adrienne Stone and anti-terrorism law expert Dr Joo-Cheong Tham.

The University of Melbourne also has a number of academics in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce who are members of the American Economic Association, including Dr Nisvan Erkal, Dr Lawrence Uren and Associate Professor Joseph Hirschberg.
