Melbourne ranks as leader in research

The University of Melbournes strong position as a leading research institution has been confirmed by 2002 statistics recently released by the Department of Education, Science and Training.
Melbourne continues to be the highest-ranked Australian university in each of the four areas identified by the Commonwealth Government as the key indices of research performance research income, research publications, number of research higher degree enrolments and number of students completing research higher degrees.
In both research expenditure and income, Melbourne ranks as the largest of Australias universities.
According to figures submitted to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Universitys research expenditure for 2002 exceeded $363 million, making it the second largest research organisation in Australia, behind only the CSIRO.
The Universitys research expenditure has increased by 58 per cent since adoption of Melbourne Agenda strategies in 1996.
Research income for 2002 from Australian competitive grants, other public sector funding, industry, Co-operative Research Centres and other sources totalled $158.8 million.
