Adopt a painting, light a gallery, at the Potter

[ UniNews Vol. 13, No. 6  19 April - 3 May 2004 ]

The University of Melbourne’s Ian Potter Museum of Art is offering people in the wider community an opportunity to adopt a painting, light a gallery, sponsor music, or support an exhibition.

The invitation marks the establishment of a new Potter Donor Program to follow on from the Founding Donor Program which made possible the opening of the Potter’s doors to the public in 1998.

The new Donor Program provides a practical way to support a range of key activities at the Potter – including the publication of research.

Manager Development and Public Programs, Mr Henry Gaughan, says the program offers an opportunity for people to join in the next phase of the Potter’s development with the re-opening of its refurbished building in 2005.

“Donors will know where their funds are being used and be able to see and enjoy the results of their contribution. An opportunity exists, for instance, to light the Leckie Window,” he says.

The University Art Collection ranges from pre-classical to contemporary art, works on paper, paintings, objects, Indigenous works and sculpture.

Mr Gaughan says many of these art works, while being significant, cannot be exhibited as they require conservation treatments and other preparatory work before they are suitable for safe public display.

“We’re launching the new donor program with the theme: ‘Make it happen’, highlighting it as an opportunity to directly support preservation of the University’s art collection and to help the Potter display as much of it as possible,” he says.

“By contributing a tax deductible donation, a participant in the donor program can make available for display an artwork of their choosing selected from a list of significant art works prepared by the Collection Management Unit.”

Participants in the program, who can remain anonymous, will become members of the Potter Donor Club for donations under $200 or join the Gamma, Beta, Alpha or Alpha 5 clubs for higher contributions.

Donors who contribute at the same or higher levels annually for a three-year cycle will be recognised as benefactors.
