Eminent University of Melbourne mathematics academic, Professor Tony Guttmann, has been awarded the 2004 B H Neumann Award of the Australian Mathematics Trust.
The B H Neumann Award is made each year to a member of the community who has made considerable contributions over several years to the enrichment of mathematics education in Australia and its nearby regions.
The 2004 award recognises, among other activities, Professor Guttmanns work during the past decade in organising the BHPBilliton University of Melbourne annual School Mathematics Competition.
The School Mathematics Competition, which aims to recognise outstanding mathematical talent, is open to secondary school students throughout Victoria. It inspires many thousands of students to enter each year, around 130 of whom are awarded prizes.
Professor Guttmann also paved the way for the establishment of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute, based at the University of Melbourne.
He is currently the Director of the University of Melbournes Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems.
The B H Neumann Awards were established to honour the achievements of Bernhard H Neumann (19092002), who was Foundation President of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers and a President of the Australian Mathematical Society.
