This is the web version of StaffNews, a weekly e-mail newsletter for staff of the University of Melbourne. ===================== 1. Obituary - Dr Jeff PressingMembers of the University were deeply saddened to learn that Dr Jeff Pressing, Department of Psychology, died suddenly on 28 April. Jeff was a superbly talented and creative member of the University with his wide-ranging interests and enthusiasm for challenging problems. Jeff came to Australian in 1975 to join the Music Department at La Trobe University, and in 1993 moved to the Psychology Department at the University of Melbourne. He had a distinguished academic reputation in both psychology and music, and his contribution to the psychology of music and mathematical modeling of skilled performance were particularly significant. He was also a well known performer and composer of music. His powerful intellect was combined with whimsical humour and kindness and he was a much-loved member of both the department and the University. We will mourn his going and our loss. Our thoughts are with Dr Gillian Wigglesworth, Department of Linguistics and Applied Languages, and with his children, Adam and Rebecca. A funeral service will be held at Trinity College Chapel at 1:30pm on Tuesday 7 May. All members of the university community are invited to attend the service that will be followed by light refreshments.
