2. Obituary - Mr Robert Prince

Colleagues and friends of Robert Prince (Information Division) were saddened by the news of his death on 18 July following a long illness.

Robert came to the Baillieu Library in 1989, having moved from Brisbane where he worked and studied at the University of Queensland.

His first position in the University of Melbourne Library was in the serials section. He moved the following year to Information Services, working there until January 2002.

During these years, Robert finished his BA (majoring in English) at Melbourne and later completed a Graduate Diploma in Information Management at RMIT.

Robert will be chiefly remembered for his contribution to a broad range of information services work, but in particular for the development of library services for students with disabilities. This included assessing students' needs and providing materials in formats accessible to the individual. He also worked with library staff in raising their awareness of disability issues, enabling them to provide more responsive services.

He formed strong relations with the staff of the Disability Liaison Unit, ensuring that students were able to access information and library resources necessary for successful engagement in their studies. His advisory and advocacy work contributed to the Library's development of policies and services underpinned by values of access and equity.

Robert's sense of humour, friendliness and integrity, but most of all his openness and respect for others, will be greatly missed by colleagues and students alike.

6. USP update

Many staff are particularly interested in how training will be conducted for Themis - the University's new IT system that will go live this January.

USP will be using a train-the-trainer approach to assist selected faculty and divisional staff to become expert process/system users. These trainers will:

  • Conduct the standard training program (predominantly to transactional staff in December and January)
  • Conduct refresher training (concurrent with standard training in January and February)
  • Provide support through both the USP drop-in centre as well through a coaching/mentoring role when they return to their 'home base'.

This model is likely to operate for a three to six month period, with traditional training and support models being utilised in the longer term.

To keep informed about Themis training, visit the USP website

The July newsletter, "Themis & Us" is now available online.
