Joint Chairs in Higher Education announced

Two leading Australian higher education experts - Professor Richard James and Professor Simon Marginson - have been appointed to Chairs in Higher Education at the University of Melbourne.
Professor James and Professor Marginson will play important leadership roles in higher education research and in advice on education policy and management to the University, and to the higher education sector.
Professor James will also lead the innovative Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE), located in the University’s Faculty of Education, which provides many of the tools and guiding principles used nationally and internationally for the improvement of higher education. It is one of the longest-established centres of its kind in the world.
Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Field Rickards, says the appointment of two such distinguished academics to such key roles is a great achievement for the University of Melbourne. “Professor James and Professor Marginson will help to establish the Faculty as a leader in higher education policy, teaching and learning, and management,” he said.
Professor James was Acting Director of the CSHE through 2005, and Associate Dean of the University’s School of Graduate Studies. He is the author of several Commonwealth Government reports on higher education policy issues.
Professor Rickards says Professor James has a distinguished research record in access and equity, the transition of students to tertiary study and university life, the student experience, learning assessment and quality assurance in the higher education sector.
Professor Simon Marginson currently has a personal Chair in Education at Monash University and has had an outstanding career in higher education studies, including policy and management. He is a noted commentator on higher education issues and in recent
years has also specialised in global and international higher education.
Professor Rickards says Professor Marginson’s work is “characterised by its outstanding quality and range, and by a consistent pattern of professional, policy and public engagement”.
Professor James’ appointment is from 1 January this year. Professor Marginson will take up his position on 1 July.
