One of Australia’s leading educators, Ms Rosa Storelli, has been appointed Deputy Chancellor of the University of Melbourne for two years from 1 January 2007.
Ms Storelli is Principal of Methodist Ladies’ College – a role she will continue – and an active member of the University of Melbourne Council. She is a former member of the Council of Ormond College.
Ms Storelli said she is delighted to accept the appointment. “I hope that this role will benefit both the University and all students entering the University. As an extension of my contribution to the University of Melbourne in recent years, this appointment will enable me to best utilise my skills and experience for the University.”
Welcoming Ms Storelli to her new role, the University’s Chancellor Mr Ian Renard said the University was particularly fortunate to have an educator of the calibre of Ms Storelli as a Deputy Chancellor.
“In her almost six years on the Council, Ms Storelli has made a substantial contribution to the University’s governance through her membership of the University Council. She has served on a number of important committees and, in particular, has had significant input to the Remuneration and Employment Conditions Committee.
“As a Deputy Chancellor she will have opportunities to put her well-honed leadership skills to work for the benefit of the University.”
Ms Storelli succeeds Dr Ben Lochtenberg, who will step down as Deputy Chancellor at the end of this year.
Dr Lochtenberg was Chairman of Orica Limited until 2001. In his long involvement on Council, he has contributed to almost every significant facet of the institution including the important leadership role in the establishment and governance of UMEE Pty Ltd (formerly Melbourne University Private Pty Ltd) as a director and later as Chairman.
Ms Storelli is one of two Deputy Chancellors, the other being Justice Alex Chernov of the Victorian Court of Appeal.
As a Deputy Chancellor, Ms Storelli’s duties will include standing-in for the Chancellor, who chairs the University Council, and officiating at some University graduations.
