Minister to celebrate achievements of young scientists at ‘Tall Poppies’ Awards at Bio21 Institute, University of Melbourne.

The Hon John Brumby MP, Minister for Innovation will attend the ‘Tall Poppies’ awards at the Bio21 Institute, University of Melbourne on Monday December 4.

The ‘Tall Poppies’ awards will be presented by Minister Brumby and Chief Scientist Dr Graham Mitchell.

The awards are given to young scientists who have made outstanding achievements in scientific research, and in communicating their work to the community.

Fellow Chief Scientist Sir Gus Nossal will also be attending the awards as a guest speaker.

“The awards recognize exceptional young scientists who have a passion for their science, and communicating their work with society” said Professor Peter Rathjen, Dean of Science at the University of Melbourne, Ambassador for the ‘Tall Poppies’ campaign in Victoria and South Australia and Victorian Chair of the Selection Committee for the awards.

The prizes are part of the ‘Tall Poppies’ campaign which conveys Australia’s intellectual achievements to the public, and encourages young Australians to follow a career in science.

Winners from the University of Melbourne and its associated institutions are:

Dr Rachel Caruso from the Department of Chemistry, for her work on developing novel materials for energy storage and for remediation of radioactive waste.

Dr Rony Duncan from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, for her work on the ethical implications of science, particularly adolescent health.

Dr Andrew Hill from the Bio21 Institute, for his work on neurodegenerative diseases such as ‘mad cow disease’ and its human form CJD.

Dr Shane Huntington from Quantum Communications Victoria within the School of Physics, for his work on telecommunications security.

The University of Melbourne is hosting the awards evening to further support and celebrate the achievements of young scientists. Last week the University was named as a leader in medicine and business by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research.

Where: Bio21 Institute, University of Melbourne.
Bio 21 is one of the largest biotechnology research centres in Australia. The building provides a striking backdrop for the awards ceremony and was awarded ‘Lab of the Year’ in 2005 for the architects Design Inc.
