Campus Snapshot: Sea of hands

[ The University of Melbourne Voice Vol. 1, No. 8  25 June - 9 July 2007 ]

National Reconciliation Week celebrations at the University of Melbourne this year, led by the University’s Centre for Indigenous Education (CIE), included this Sea of Hands on the South Lawn.

Staff and students braved rain squalls and gusty winds to inscribe and place the hands. Other events on campus as part of the week included an all Indigenous band, Wildflower, from Arnhem Land, playing in the Union Building’s North Court, a We are Yolngu art exhibition hosted and organised by Trinity College, and a preview to a photographic display in the CIE, More Than a Piece of Paper, showcasing some of the University’s many Indigenous graduates over the past 10 years.

Pictured with the Sea of Hands are (from left) Ryen Diggle (first year Medicine), Steve Clarke (CIE), Meg Tudor (Indigenous Studies Program, School of Culture and Communication), and John Page and Jirra Harvey (CIE). [ Click to enlarge ]
