Melbourne Update $10m centre for juvenile diabetes vaccine
Wednesday 26 March 2003
The search for a vaccine against juvenile Type-1 diabetes has received a boost with the establishment of a vaccine development centre at the University of Melbourne.
Believed to be a world-first in the public sector, the Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre will operate from the University's School of Population Health.
The new Centre was launched recently by Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, Kay Patterson.
The $10 million initiative is a joint venture between Australias National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the New York-based Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International.
Head of the Universitys School of Population Health, Professor Terry Nolan says locating the Centre within the school will create a critical mass of research expertise by helping to foster links with colleagues who have shared interests in illness prevention and key issues in developing vaccination programs.
