Nanostructured Materials – The New Frontier in Medicine - Vice Chancellor Public Lecture Series Monday 15 September

Media Release, Friday 12 September 2008

Professor Frank Caruso, ARC Federation Fellow in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering will present the Public Lecture “Nanostructured Materials and Biomedicine” at the University of Melbourne on Monday 15 September at 6.30pm

“The interface between nano- and biotechnology is an exciting new frontier for scientific exploration that promises to revolutionise healthcare and medicine,” says Professor Caruso who leads the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology within the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

Caruso says engineered nanomaterials with biological functions are expected to underpin the development of techniques that will provide specific diagnostic, therapeutic, and imaging functions, significantly improving the way in which healthcare is provided in the future.

The lecture will focus on recent advances in the design and preparation of nanoengineered particulate systems for the encapsulation of drugs and vaccines, cell targeting and intelligent drug/vaccine release. Application of these devices for the ultimate treatment of cancer, HIV and the diagnosis of heart disease will be presented.

Professor Caruso is a world leader in polymer science and technology research aimed at engineering polymer nanostructures, focusing on the self-assembly of polymers to produce advanced nano- and bio- materials. He has authored over 195 refereed journal papers, seven book chapters and is on the ISI’s Most Highly Cited list.

Frank Caruso has received numerous international awards. The more recent include - in 2005 he was awarded the Australian Academy of Science Le Fèvre Memorial Prize, and in 2007, he received a second ARC Federation Fellowship.

He has served on a number of committees and expert panels related to nanotechnology for the Victorian State Government, CSIRO and various universities.
