Marathon Medals

The University of Melbourne continued its successful year of inter-university sport by winning the Australian University Championship – Distance Running – last month.

The Championship, held as part of the Melbourne Marathon, saw some 308 students represent the University across the 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon race distances.

Outstanding individual performances included Tyler Harlan’s gold medal in the University Marathon men’s category. The Land and Food Resources Masters student completed the 42km course in 2hr49.08mins. Also from Land and Food Resources, PhD student Kristian Ronacher finished the marathon in 3rd place in a time of 3hr04.05mins.

In the women’s marathon, World Champion rower and Science student Alice McNamara finished with the silver medal at her first try over the distance. McNamara covered the distance in 3hr19.46mins, just 15 seconds away from the gold medal. Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences student Bianca Share finished just behind Alice in third place in a time of 3hr23.12mins.

In other races, Ryan Cantwell (Diploma of Finance) finished second in the University Half Marathon category in a time of 1hr15.32mins; while David Ulbrick (Master of Construction Law) took the silver medal in the 10km in a time of 35.55mins and Simon Duffy (Master of Social Health) took the bronze in 37.55mins.
