Digital Assets Through YouTube

[ The University of Melbourne Voice Vol. 3, No. 2  12 May - 9 June 2008 ]

The University of Melbourne has led the way in providing Australian and world-wide access to its digital assets through YouTube.

“Academics, current and potential students alike have over the past decade learned to turn to the internet for basic information about their courses, their University and the activities occurring there,” says David Scott, Associate Producer of Visions.

“Now, we are seeing an increasing demand by these same people for ‘Web 2.0 content’, such as live streaming and regular downloadable video content.”

Every episode of Visions is simultaneously available on Youtube, as a vodcast, and as an on-demand stream.

The University of Melbourne will continue to push ahead with providing content of its activities to the widest possible audience.

YouTube provides those with an already strong link to the University or just a general curiosity with a quick and easy access point for news of the University’s latest research, teaching and learning. Topics range from world trade development, the plight of refugees to the effects of climate change on Victoria’s wine industry.

The University’s unique ‘DreamLarge’ advertising campaign is also posted via Youtube.

‘With viewers and subscribers all over the world, from India and Indonesia to Jordan, the UAE and of course, across Australia, our academics, students and research have never been more accessible,” Scott says.
