1. Frank Tate Learning Centre opening

The Frank Tate Learning Centre, the second stage of the Eastern Precinct project, will open to all students on Monday 8 September.

The Eastern Precinct Project is a major redevelopment of the ERC library as well as the creation of new informal learning and social facilities in adjoining areas. It will provide improved research and learning environments for all students as part of the introduction of the Melbourne Model.

The new Learning Centre in the Frank Tate Building is a series of exciting informal spaces and IT zones for individual and collaborative learning. The design team has created a suite of unique spaces which promise to surprise students in many ways. Work continues on further stages of the project to refurbish other levels of the ERC library and develop the new Science Student Centre...

2. Life Sciences Computational Initiative briefing

The Victorian Life Sciences Computational Initiative (VLSCI) is a major computation life sciences facility within the Parkville precinct to be housed at the University of Melbourne. The VLSCI will support and advance the computational needs of Victorian life sciences researchers.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) will host a briefing session and discussion on research engagement for the VLSCI for all interested staff.

3. Addressing of outgoing mail and internal mail

The accurate addressing of outgoing mail and internal mail will ensure that your mail is delivered as quickly as possible. This is particularly important with mailouts, both internal and external, when databases are used for recording addresses. The addressing procedures, detailed in the University Mailroom Information Booklet, should be followed at all times and databases updated. Copies of the booklet can be obtained by contacting Alan Smith on 8344 8221, or by e-mail to alans@unimelb.edu.au.

Internal mail should include the following minimum information. Name – Faculty/Department/Section – Building Name or Street Address.

4. Public Hearing: Research Training and Research Workforce Issues in Australian Universities

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Innovation will conduct a public hearing for its research training inquiry at the University of Melbourne’s Graduate Centre on Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 September.

The Committee will inquire into the contribution that Australian universities make to Australian research training, and the challenges Australian universities face in recruiting, training and retaining quality research staff in Australia.

Professor Dick Strugnell, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate Research), will be making presentations on behalf of the Go8 and the University of Melbourne.

The hearing is open for staff and students to observe proceedings from the public gallery. Sessions include Monday: 9:00am–1:00pm & 2:00pm–4:30pm and Tuesday: 8:30am–11:45am. A full program is available at: www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/isi/research/hearings.htm.

5. Gathering for Marc Marsden

A gathering to celebrate the life of Marc Marsden who died on 26 August will be held on Friday 5 September at the Fitzroy Victoria Bowling Club in Edinburgh Gardens, North Fitzroy, from 3-5pm.

Mr Marsden was a member of the academic staff of the University’s School of Earth Sciences from 1953 to 1988. and a graduate of the Department of Geology. He organised and managed the Australian section of the 1956 Olympic Torch Relay, served as Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1961-1965 and as a Director of the Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences. He developed extensive international research programmes was awarded the title of Chevalier des Palmes Academiques by the French Government.

Some patients of the University Health Service have been contacted via mail by two medical practitioners who left the Health Service in early 2008 to join another medical practice. The Health Service has not given permission for any patient information or records to be released to these practitioners.

7. Melbourne Graduate Expo 2008

The Melbourne Graduate Expo, flagship graduate study information event in 2008, will be held on Wednesday 10 September from 3-8pm at the Sidney Myer Asia Centre.

Staff considering further study in 2009 will be able to discuss their options one-on-one with academic and admissions staff from all of the University's graduate schools. With over 340 graduate programs across a broad range of disciplines and opportunities for both career entry and professional development, the choice at Melbourne is extensive.

8. The Woodward Medal - Call for nominations

Sir Edward Woodward, a former Chancellor, and Lady Woodward, with the support of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, have established two Medals for staff at the University of Melbourne. The Medals are awarded to annually for research published in the preceding three years that is considered to have made the most significant contribution by a member of staff to knowledge in a field of science and technology, and in a field of humanities and social sciences.

Nominations are invited from all areas of the University.

9. University of Melbourne Publication Grants – books

The Publications Sub-Committee invites applications for the third round of 2008 publication grants for publications that are the product of sustained scholarly research as well as major creative works with a research or scholarly component. A subsidy of up to $4000 of central funds may be sought to meet illustration costs, publication charges or to subsidise the publication price where this is critical to the work being published. The applicant's faculty or department must commit a contribution of at least 50 per cent of the central funds subsidy.

10. Business Council Chief Executive Katie Lahey to speak

Staff members who are alumni are invited to the Vice Chancellor’s Oration for Alumni.

Business Council of Australia Chief Executive and prestigious business alumna Katie Lahey will speak on “Banishing the Stereotypes – The Role of Big Business in Shaping the Future of Australia” at the oration on Thursday 25 September.

The BCA is an influential council in the business world, made up of chief executives of 100 top Australian companies. Ms Lahey has almost 20 years of experience as a chief executive and was appointed CE of the BCA in 2001.

11. Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

The Bio21 Cluster seeks researchers in biomedical fields to offer casual positions to undergraduate students through the UROP scheme. To gain experience in “real-life” research, students are employed by the host laboratory full-time during part of the long vacation and for 8 hours/wk during semester.

Closing date for expressions of interest: Friday 26 September 2008.

Students will be available to commence placements during the summer recess. Bio21 Cluster co-ordinates recruitment and student selection. Funds are not available from Bio21 Cluster to support student positions.

12. Reminder: Impact of IT Services upgrade

Work to upgrade and improve IT Services to the University will be undertaken on 6 September 2008. This includes systems relocation between data centres (from 8:00am to 9:00pm) and data centre migration to new core network (from 8:00am and 5:00pm).

13. Special offer for cervical cancer vaccination

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has been identified as the single most common cause of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer vaccine prevents most infections from the strains of HPV that cause over 70 per cent of cervical cancers.

Two cervical cancer vaccines are available - Gardasil and Cervarix.

Women aged 18- 26 with Medicare cards are eligible for the free Gardasil program.

For female international students and women from 27 to 45 years, the University Health Service has a special offer on the Cervarix program.

Commence a three-vaccination course of Cervarix vaccine before 31October 2008, and receive the third dose free. . Standard attendance fees apply and the cost of the vaccine at $145.00 per dose.

14. EO Unit Information Session: pregnancy, parental leave and breastfeeding
The next informal information session in the program conducted by the Equal Opportunity Unit will cover University policies and provisions for pregnancy, parental leave and breast feeding.
It is on Wednesday 10 September in the Frank Tate Room, Alice Hoy building, from 1pm - 2pm.
The sessions provide guidance to staff and supervisors on a range of equal opportunity issues and information about rights and responsibilities and the relevant University policies and procedures.

15. People who do not experience headache required for Vision Research

People aged between 18 to 45 years who do not experience headache are required to form a control group for a research project investigating visual function following migraine headaches. To be eligible you need to get very infrequent headaches and never have had a migraine. Up to two test sessions of 1-2 hours in duration are involved which include an abbreviated clinical eye examination and computer based testing of vision at the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, University of Melbourne. Volunteers will be reimbursed $20 per session to assist with travel expenses incurred in attending.

17. Volunteers: Melbourne School of Engineering research project

Volunteers from the Melbourne metropolitan area are needed to take part in the Melbourne School of Engineering research project, ‘Patellofemoral arthritis: Efficacy of physiotherapy and understanding the role of joint stress.”

Participants must be more than 40 years of age, have osteo-arthritis in the kneecap (PFJ), and have pain behind or around their kneecap that is aggravated by walking up or down stairs, rising from sitting or squatting. They must understand written and spoken English.

18. Call for submissions: Publication profiling Asia-related research
The Asia Institute is seeking submissions from postgraduate students and staff members engaged in Asia-related research for a publication profiling Asia-related research at the University of Melbourne. Submissions should profile one aspect of current research activities or a recently completed project. The publication will be officially launched as part of Asia Week 20-24 October 2008.
Submissions should be 100 - 250 words in length (doc. or rtf. format) and include at least one high resolution JPEG or TIFF image of yourself or your research/book cover etc. Submissions are due Monday 22 September.

19. New ARC Linkage Projects website for University researchers

The Melbourne Research Office's ARC Linkage Projects website assists researchers establish research partnerships and prepare competitive applications for funding through the ARC Linkage Projects scheme.

20. Eating disorder training - limited places still available
Counselling Services' mental health training program in partnership with the Eating Disorder Foundation of Victoria is offering a training session on Eating Disorders on Wednesday 24 September from 9.30am- 3.30pm.
The session is free for University of Melbourne staff. The training program will cover types of eating disorders, risk factors and how to identify, intervene and support students who might be at risk of or experiencing an eating disorder. Bookings are essential.
