2. Staff scholarships to study at the Melbourne Graduate School of Management
The Faculty of Economics and Commerce is offering 10 scholarships for outstanding staff to take up graduate study in the Melbourne Graduate School of Management in 2010. Ten places are available free of charge to staff who are supported by a division head (Dean or Vice-Principal). 3. Tsinghua University Day - invitation
Tsinghua University Day will be held on Thursday 15 October. 4. HR Policy Consultation – Death of a Staff Member
The HR Division is seeking input from interested staff members on this draft policy until 5:00pm Friday 23 October. The proposed policy changes seek to update procedures to be followed in the event of a staff member’s death. All comments submitted by staff will be considered and, where appropriate, included in the ongoing policy development process. 5. 2010 scholarship scoring information sessions
The Graduate Research Scholarships Committee (GRSC) will hold the first of two scholarship scoring information sessions for department and faculty staff.
Wednesday 14 October, 1:00-2:15pm in the Michael J Rand Seminar Room, Room N817, Floor 8, Medical Building. Pre-registration is not required and the session will be repeated on Monday 16 November. 6. Personnel Policy and Procedures (PPP) manual update
During September 2009, following consultation with staff, the Administrative Policies and Practices Group (APPG) approved amendments to the following sections of the Personnel Policy and Procedures manual to remove duplication:
Chapter 1.3 – Fixed Term Contracts (deletion of chapter)
Chapter 1.2 – Types and Basis of Employment
Chapter 4.8 – Casual Staff

7. H1N1 (Swine Flu) vaccine
The Federal Government has made available H1N1 vaccine which is free for all students and staff, though Government guidelines require a GP consultation before the vaccine is administered to which standard billing practices for the consultation and administration of the vaccination may apply. 8. Applications open for Children's Services in 2010
Waiting list applications are now open for Children’s Services for 2010. Children’s Services offer innovative early childhood programs for children from three months old to school-age at two Children’s Centres. Priority is given to staff and students of the University, services operating from 7.45am – 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. 10. Universitas 21 events
Several major Universitas 21 network events are planned for the next three months. The third Learning Environment Design Forum is now taking place at the University of Virginia with participants looking at ways to transform traditional spaces into innovate learning environments. The University of Glasgow is hosting the U21 Undergraduate Research Conference (15-21 October) with almost 80 undergraduate students, followed by the Water Futures for Sustainable Cities steering group meeting (19-20 October) and the U21 Managers’ Meeting from 22 to 23 October.
The U21 Food Security Workshop will be held at the University of Edinburgh from 4-5 November, providing a platform for discussion between food security experts in the U21 network. The workshop will set the agenda for collaboration in teaching and research between U21 institutions around food security themes for the next five years. 11.Evaluation of the Netbook Trial - research seminar
Dr Jim Pettigrew (Assessment Research Centre) will explain the essential features of the Netbook Trial evaluation, a project contracted by the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (led by Professor Patrick Griffin). 15. Themis Financials intermediate (internal transactions) pilot
Thursday 22 October 10:00am – 1:00pm. Trainer: Karen Ritter. The Documentation and Training Services team are running a pilot training class for Themis Finance data entry and manager users. This course is designed for staff who are frequent users of the Internal Transactions module in Themis Financials. Researchers in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences are seeking volunteers to attend a free workshop at the Royal Melbourne Hospital on either Fri 16 Oct or Fri 30 Oct 1:15-2:45pm to look at finding trustworthy, evidence-based information on the Internet about health. 23. Sleep research in children - volunteers wanted
In collaboration with the University of Melbourne and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute, the Ritchie Centre for Baby Health Research is investigating the effects of snoring in young children on blood pressure, behaviour, and learning. Healthy preschool children (3-5 years old) who do NOT snore are sought to participate as controls. Participation involves an overnight sleep study at the Melbourne Children's Sleep Unit, Monash Medical Centre (with a parent) followed by a fun at-home developmental assessment (1.5 hrs).
