1. Melbourne Cup Day mail deliveries and collections
Australia Post and Spring Global Mail do not deliver incoming or collect
outgoing mail on Melbourne Cup Day. Outgoing mail will not be collected
from the University Mailroom until the afternoon of 4 November. There
will only be one delivery/collection of mail by University staff and the
contract courier service on Cup Day, which will take place before 12

Nominations for two elected positions on University Council- one

3. Narrm Oration and Murrup Barak launch
The Narrm Oration, first of the University's Parkville Indigenous
Orations, is entitled 'Indigenous Partnerships: The Academy as a site
for enduring relationships and the transmission of old and new
knowledge' and will be delivered by Mason Durie, Professor of Maori
Research and Development and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Massey University,
New Zealand, on Thursday 5 November from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the
Basement Theatre, The Spot, Faculty of Economics and Commerce. The
Murrup Barak, Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development will be
launched by the VC immediately following the Narrm Oration. RSVP

4. Email scams - a message from IT Security Services
Staff are advised NOT to respond to emails requesting sensitive
information such as usernames and passwords. The University will NEVER
request sensitive information via email. Be wary of unsolicited emails,
specifically those purporting to be from the University, banks or other
financial institutions. Report such emails via the web form at the
Service Desk website, servicedesk.unimelb.edu.au/ or call the
Information Services Service Desk on 8344 0888.

5. HR policy consultation
The HR Division is seeking input from interested staff members on
proposed policy changes relating to the management of discrimination,
sexual harassment and bullying matters, until 5:00pm Friday 13 November.
Staff can review a draft version of the policy at
www.hr.unimelb.edu.au/aboutus/hr-policies/consultation.
All comments submitted by staff will be considered and, where
appropriate, included in the ongoing policy development process.

6. New Property and Campus Services website
The newly-designed Property and Campus Services website has been
finalised, and can be accessed at www.pcs.unimelb.edu.au/ . It
replaces the existing website at www.pb.unimelb.edu.au/. Staff
should bookmark to reflect the new site. For continuous improvement of
the website, any feedback or suggestions are most welcomed via email:

7. Themis technical upgrade
Themis will be unavailable from 3:00pm on Friday 6 November, and back
online on Monday morning 9 November due to an upgrade of Themis to the
most recent technology patches.

These workshops support supervisors and staff to navigate the change
process.

9. Cornelius Regan Trust 2009 awards
The Cornelius Regan Trust 2009 awards for the professional development
of academic and professional staff are now open for applications. These
awards provide recognition and assistance to outstanding academic and
professional staff and enable them to pursue a professional development

10. Staff welfare fund
The University provides financial assistance to staff or their
dependants in circumstances of special need through the Edward Stevens
Trust. Special circumstances may include absence from work due to
illness where all paid leave credits have been expended, needing to
maintain contributions to a superannuation scheme while on sick leave,
or any other circumstances so judged by the Head of Department or
Executive Director (Human Resources). Policy and procedures for making

11. EOWA employment of choice for women
The Federal Office for Women is reviewing the Equal Opportunity for
Women in the Workplace Act 1999 and Agency. Organisations with more than
100 employees are required to report to the Agency. The Agency will
continue to assess compliance reports and applications that are due this
year. The University is participating in the consultation process and
will submit an application for the 2010 Employer of Choice for Women

12. Proofreading course
Understand the general principles, finer points and common traps of
proofreading. This half-day course combines instruction, discussion and
practice on a range of proofreading tasks, and is ideal for staff who
want to boost their proofreading skills. Participants should bring a
notebook, red and blue pens, a pencil (plus pencil sharpener if
required) liquid paper and an eraser. The course will be given by Glenys
Osborne, former managing editor at Macmillan Education and Thomson

Enhancing Wellbeing and Managing Stress: Participants will examine the
effects of thinking patterns on managing mood and building resilience.

On 10 September the Senate referred to the Community Affairs References
Committee an inquiry into suicide in Australia. Stories and opinions
from the public are needed for the Committee to produce a report with
recommendations for the Commonwealth Government to consider. Send

16. Digital Print Centre online ordering
The Digital Print Centre has launched a new step-by-step online ordering
system. Staff will be able to obtain an instant quote, submit jobs

17. Travel Advice from Environment Health and Safety Unit
The Environment Health and Safety Unit advises staff that DFAT has
